The World's Largest Blog

Today was another big driving day, but we still saw some roadside attractions along the way.  The first one was something that wasn't originally in the plan for this trip, and Steve decided to surprise me with it first thing this morning:  Minnesota's Largest Candy Store.  Some say it's the world's largest, too.  This place was massive, and it was a lot of fun to walk through.  We felt like kids in a cand-...well, you get it!  This place had a huge selection of candy along with other things like sauces, pancake mixes, cookie mixes, etc.  They also had a huge selection of sodas and you are allowed to make mix packs of them.  We took full advantage!  :-)  Later, we tried one of the sodas during the drive and it surprised us how good it tasted.

This was really good - it tasted like a buttery cream soda, with a hint of corn at the end.

The next stop was a very quick one:  the Mushroom Building.  This building was once an old gas station, but now serves ice cream (according to atlasobscura.com).

One of the highlights from today was to see the world's largest ball of twine created by one man.  Usually Steve handles the logistics for all of our trips, so he saw pictures ahead of time of most of the stuff we have seen.  I knew the ball of twine was behind glass, but I didn't expect it to be as big as it was!

The next stop was to see the world's largest crow.  The crow was built in 1988 to honor Minnesota's centennial.  We moved on to see Big Ole, a Viking statue in Alexandria, MN.  Big Ole was constructed for the 1965 World's Fair.  We also stopped at a brewery in Alexandria to pick up some beers.  The next stop was to see the world's largest prairie chicken statue, in Rothsay, MN.  Apparently Rothsay is the "prairie chicken capital of Minnesota" so they made a statue.

Our next stop was in Fargo to stop at another brewery and to check out the wood chipper in the Visitor's Center, which had a supporting role in the movie Fargo.  Fun fact:  until today, I had never seen the movie.  I watched it during the first couple legs of our drive this morning so I could understand the reference.  :-)

Our last stop of the day was to see the KVLY-TV Mast, which is currently the 6th tallest structure in the western hemisphere.  At one point it was the tallest, but it has lost that title now.  While we were still 13 miles away (according to GPS), we were already able to see it!

We actually got to our hotel in the daylight today so we had some great carry-out from the local Mexican restaurant and are enjoying another covid-style beer in small glasses session courtesy of Copper Trail and Fargo Brewing Companies.  Tomorrow we're exploring the wide-open spaces of North Dakota before we reach our main destination of Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park!
